Summer Camp Basketball Outreach
The Crossfire basketball camps were started in 1990. The camps have been a testimony to the Lord. Randy was praying about a basketball camp in 1990 when he was ministering with Spirit Express Ministry in Memphis, TN. In a support meeting with some Christian businessmen in Asheville, NC Randy was approached by a gentleman names Robert Hoey, principal at Asheville Christian Academy, who said “if you ever want to have a basketball camp in Asheville, you can use our facility at the Academy as a donation.” He also said “I have a friend that owns a T-shirt company, and I believe that he will help you with the t-shirts.” Randy thought “Lord, you must really want me to have this camp.” A few days later, a high school friend of Randy’s, Tom Clark, called and offered free printing from his printing company.
The goal was set the first summer for 100 boys. Randy sais” Lord if one boy gets saved, they camp will be a success, “by the cut- off date, 175 boys had signed up with 35 on the waiting list. Over 100 boys prayed to receive Christ this first year. A girl’s camp was started the next summer along with the boys. Glory to the Lord, since then over 8,200 young people, boys and girls, ages 6-17 have come through the camps.
In 1993, Randy was blessed to have Jamie Johnson join him as Co-Director of the camp.
The goal of the camps is to provide Christ-centered, fun-filled, learning experience. The camps are designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball and give campers’ added game experience, along with sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Christian principles that will help them deal with the pressures they are facing in their different age groups.
There are half-day, full-day, and overnight camp options.
Besides many players going on to compete on the high school and college level, the greatest thing that has happened through the camps is that over 6,500 young people and parents have made professions of faith or total surrenders or their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ through the camps.
Crossfire gives about $25,000.00 worth of scholarships every summer to young people with legitimate financial needs. These funds are raised through godly individuals and businesses who give to make this outreach possible.
